About me
The Journey to Ikshana
Hi, I’m Caroline, founder of Ikshana Life Coaching. I am a mum to three children and wonderful Assistance Dog, Lennon, who we are very blessed to have in our world. I am also a family carer to my youngest child who has a rare genetic condition called Sotos Syndrome. I had just finished a degree in Applied Social Studies in 2012 when our whole world as a family was turned upside down. We suddenly found ourselves navigating a journey that we never expected to be on. There were so many appointments in the early years I had no choice but to put my career on hold. One of us needed to keep working to support our family. It made sense that my husband would stay in the paid employment role and I would take the family carer role. It was a scary time not knowing where to find help and support. This is why I trained to be a Life Coach.
How Life Coaching Can Support You In Your Caring Role – You Need To STOP Putting Yourself Last and Risking Caregiver Burnout!
Find yourself longing to have something back for yourself? – it’s not selfish, it’s normal – you need your individuality.
It’s time to meet yourself where you are at! – coaching can help you reduce feelings of overwhelm, acknowledge where you are on your journey, reach that acceptance and give yourself permission to empower yourself.
Goal setting – setting realistic, achievable goals for yourself supports you to move forward with a positive mindset. Coaching supports you through accountability, reflection, focusing on the process rather than the outcome and celebrating all the wins. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Confidence building – feeling low in confidence? You are NOT alone. Many carers I have worked with have expressed feelings of diminished or even depleted confidence. Coaching supports you to identify areas in your life that you may feel less confident and how to turn this around in whatever way works best for you. Believe me I’ve been there, experiencing low confidence and imposter syndrome. Coaching helped me to identify how I was feeling, reframing my thoughts and focusing on the many strengths I had gained through my caring role. I was then able to implement these strengths into other areas of my life going forward.
Navigating the grief – life may have not turned out the way you had envisaged it would. It’s ok to feel sad and recognise this emotion as part of the journey. There are elements of a diagnosis that are sad but you will also experience many rewarding moments. It’s about learning to look at life through a different lens.
Recognising guilt – feel guilty about not spending enough time with your other children, laughing or finding joy in things, wanting to have a life outside of your caring role, wanting to return to work – the list is endless. This is normal. Coaching supports you to find your joy again and put strategies in place to reframe and squash the guilt.
I completed a Life Coaching Course with the Irish Lifecoach Institute, graduating in May 2023. I set up my own coaching practice in September 2023 which was a really proud moment for me. Since then I have primarily been working with family carers through organisations including Care Alliance Ireland, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and Rare Ireland.
It is my passion to offer coaching support to those who are in a caring role, whatever that might look like – becoming a carer for a loved one, child, partner or parent, navigating being a parent or coming to the end of your caring role and life going forward.
We will all end up being a carer in some shape or form through our lives so having good self care and a good relationship with yourself is invaluable for everyone.
